MODULE 02
FLATNESS VS PROJECTION
Module 02 helps students gain a deeper understanding about flatness and projection through creating our own Mario World based on the Mario World template given to us. In this module, our dexterity in using tools, such as T-square and set square, as well as softwares, such as Illustrator and InDesign is very much trained.

This two-level Mario World Projection uses a set of bold and contrasting colors to create the perception of heaviness and firmness of the world. Contrasting to the colors, the semi-transparent water, gives a lighter and more vulnerable sense of the illustrated world. Various textures are also used to break the monotony of the components’ shapes. The light which comes from the South-West direction creates shadows or darker shades on the sides of the buildings, metal pipes, and other objects. The interconnections of the components of the world is achieved through adding elements, such as: bridges, railways, stairs, connecting pipes and ladders. They depict the connections of the front view and back view from the Mario World template given; as well as the upper and the lower level of the projected world. The raindrops and the puddles also show the relationship of the ground and the sky or clouds.
